Sizing can change by 1/4"(0.5cm) due to the hand made nature of each gorget. Measurments are taken on the outside of the gorget and this should be conisdered when choosing your size.
Collars are
14.75” (37.5cm) known as the small
16.75” (42.5cm) known as the medium
19.75” (50cm) known as the Large
21.5” (54.5cm) known as the XL
24.5” (62cm) known as the XXL
Measurments are taken OUTSIDE the collar
Gorget standard collar is 1.25 Inches (3cm) Collar. You can request a 1inch (2.5cm) collar during commision if you have a shorter neck (I personally wear a short model).
There is an important question you need to ask yourself first. Will I wear this over or under my gambeson? OR Will I wear this with only a light t-shirt under it or will I have my garb under it?
Once you decide how you will wear the gorget, you should put whatever you are going to have under it on. I only wear mine with 2 layers of linen under it with no padding, therefor I will be measuring with just my t-shirt on. Measurements should not be overly tight.
Base of neck measurments are taken at an angle. This image shows Mine is 16 inches
Throat measurments are taken strait on over the larenx. This Image shows mine is 14.5 inches
Now let's get those numbers! You will need a flexable measuring tape (or string you can measure against a ruler later).
There are two measurments we need to know about. One is the BASE of your neck, and one is your THROAT.
Most people measure their necks at their throat. However for our gorgets your base of neck measurements are more acurate.
My base of neck measurement is 16 inches (40cm)
My throat measurment is 14.5 inches (37cm)
The Medium gorget was designed directly for me. It is 16.75” (42.5cm). You always want to add an inch to the measurement when choosing a gorget so it does not choke you. Air tends to be important for survival!
You should note that nearly everyone does fit the sizes one up from their measurments as well, though sometimes abit to loose. Below are examples of the sizes UP and DOWN on me to show.
The Small suprisingly closed around my neck but is deeply uncomfortable.
The medium is the size i personally wear. I cannot slip my chin into the collar, it does not move to much.
The Large is a tad to large, though still covers and protect me adiuitly. I can slip my chin in it however which is not ideal.
Moral of the story? If your too close to one size, go up in size, it will still protect you with your helmet or mask on. Better comfortable and protected then struggling to breath and look down. If you MUST go up in size you can also pad the gorget to reduce excess movement. These gorgets have been tested with excess force and where found to not NEED padding, but sometimes padding is nice and each fighter's choice.
Ensure you measure with your arming garments and any chainmail on! padding and chain also will raise the height.
Make sure to measure with your gambeson on and around the padded neck. The padding will also raise the hight of the collar.
Make sure to measure with whaever underclothes you use, weither it be your rash gaurd or t-shirt. Stealth gorgets like this will NOT sit over your gambeson if descide later to try to do so.
